Guilty on airport ecstasy possession

A 31-year-old British national was detained at Dunedin International Airport on Tuesday when a tablet of ecstasy was discovered in his luggage during a random search at Customs as he arrived from Australia.

Richard Anthony Warburton (31), driver, of Houghton, England, appeared before Judge Robert Spear, of Hamilton, in the Dunedin District Court yesterday charged with possessing the Class B controlled drug MDMA (ecstasy), at Dunedin on March 25.

Warburton admitted possessing one ecstasy tablet, was convicted and fined $250 with court costs $130.

The summary, from police prosecutor Tim Hambleton said Warburton arrived at Dunedin International Airport on a flight from Brisbane, about 3pm.

The random Customs search resulted in Warburton admitting concealing one ecstasy tablet in a small plastic bag in a deodorant stick.

Sergeant Paul McLaughlan of Dunedin, said Warburton was sent back to Brisbane on an afternoon flight.
