Contractors get under way with a massive concrete pour at the new Dunedin hospital inpatients building site yesterday.

The concrete being poured at the site is part of the substructure works, which included the pile capping.

A Health New Zealand spokesman said a larger pour carried out over the past 24 hours would form the basis for the deeper part of the foundations, where lift pits would eventually be built.

Work would soon begin on the concrete slab that will tie these elements together.
