Police are appealing for information after a bank robbery in North Dunedin yesterday afternoon.

A man walked into the Westpac Gardens branch in North Rd at 1.45pm, handed a plastic bag to the female teller and demanded money, Detective Sergeant Chris Henderson, of Dunedin, said.

While no weapon was displayed, police were told the man's actions indicated he may have been armed.

The man left the bank with "a quantity of money" and was last seen running across North Rd towards Gladstone Rd.

The man is described as Caucasian, 160cm-170cm tall, and of a thin to medium build.

He was wearing dark glasses, a jacket and a distinctive green beanie with a light coloured band.

Det Sgt Henderson urged anyone who saw the man fleeing the scene, or who recognised him or his clothes, to contact police.

The teller was "shaken and upset", but received plenty of support after the robbery, Det Sgt Henderson said.
