Volunteer Samantha Lindsey (12), of Dunedin, holds puppy Twix at the Otago SPCA in Opoho, Dunedin, yesterday.

The Columba College pupil was at the animal shelter on the first day of a week-long free school holiday programme for 11 to 14-year-olds.

It was the first programme she had attended.

''I want to help out the community,'' she said.

Volunteering Otago youth co-ordinator Heather Moore said 10 children yesterday attended the programme, which could accommodate twice as many children for the remaining activities that are open for bookings.

The children would make preserves today to give to the Presbyterian Support Otago Family Works Foodbank, work in the Shetland St community garden in Kaikorai Valley tomorrow, create a mural for Northeast Valley Baptist Church on Thursday and work on a radio show at Otago Access Radio on Friday.

An identical programme was open to 14 to 17-year-olds next week, she said.
