Victorian education was experienced by 38 Oamaru Intermediate School pupils who toured Historic Oamaru yesterday.

The year 7 pupils are taking part in the "Play to Clay" project, instigated last year, that will result in them producing individual tiles that will become part of playscapes throughout Oamaru.

The pupils were the first of three groups from the school to be involved in the project.

Their task was to photograph and note features that inspired them which they could use to design their tiles.

The project was instigated last year by Gloria Hurst and the school's art technology teacher, Sue McLean. That resulted in the creation of about 130 tiles for a totem pole which will go in the new junior playground being created at Friendly Bay. This year, about 150 tiles will form a display wall at the playground.

The children will load their photos on to a computer and select one which they will use to design their individual tile.

This will be done with the help of Lazycat Pottery and Tileworks' Vaughan Tessier-Varlet, who will fire the 15cm-square tiles.
