When a child gets knocked over, bangs their knee or gets squirted with a hose, usually there are tears.

But not at yesterday's Stride, Ride and Slide multisport event.

There was nothing but squeals, giggles and high fives.

About 130 children, aged between 2 and 6, ran, rode trikes, balance bikes and bicycles, and slid on a slippery slide provided by the New Zealand Fire Service at Logan Park as an introduction to triathlon racing.

Sport Otago active movement adviser Kerri Maclennan said the event was a great way for younger children to get outside and involved in some active fun.

The children were divided into age groups, and as part of the event, they ran 50m, rode 150m and slid on the water slide before running to the finish line.

The water slide was such an attraction for many of the children that some opted not to finish the race, instead going on the water slide again and again and again.

Those who did finish the event were greeted with certificates of participation from the organisers as well as high fives from their support crews (otherwise known as parents).

The event follows similar events run by Sport Otago earlier this year in Dunedin, Oamaru and Balclutha.
