Horse manure on Ocean View Recreation Reserve was a hot topic at last week's Saddle Hill Community Board meeting.

An Ocean View dog walker, who did not wish to be named, spoke to Taieri Times last week about his concerns that horse owners were failing to clean up the manure deposited on the reserve and beach because there were no consequences for not doing so.

Dog owners could be fined if they failed to collect their dog's droppings, but a horse owners could not.

''It's unfair.''

Firmer rules were needed for horse owners to ensure the unsightly soiling was stopped, he said.

Earlier, at the board meeting, Keith McFadyen had also raised the issue, saying a horse deposit was potentially as big a problem as dog droppings because a horse ''poo'' was the equivalent of about 35 dog ''poos''.

Board chairman Scott Weatherall said installing a big bin at the reserve to dump the horse manure was a possibility and the logistics would be discussed with the local pony club.
