Footpaths have been closed and scaffolding has gone up around the old Cadbury warehouse site in Dunedin yesterday, in anticipation of the building’s demolition.

Two inner-city blocks’ buildings will become 55,000 tonnes of debris to make way for the new Dunedin Hospital.

Health Minister David Clark said there would be changes around town.

"We won’t see dust and we won’t see traffic disruption immediately, but that stuff will come with time."

Christchurch construction and demolition firm Ceres is the main demolition contractor.

Operations manager Swaroop Gowda said it was estimated there would be "at peak" a workforce of 40 demolition workers.
