The Dunedin Hospital's reception desk was surrounded by well-wishers and flowers yesterday as the ''mum of the hospital'' completed her last shift after 25 years of service.

Receptionist Lynda Short said it had been an emotional day as she farewelled colleagues and friends.

The highlights of her role included ''meeting all sorts of people and helping the public''.

''You get to know the community, get to talk to all sorts of people.''

Wesley Bachur, team leader of patient affairs at the hospital, said Mrs Short would be impossible to replace.

''She goes the extra mile, one of those people you can count on every day. Rain or shine, she always has a great smile on her face.

''She has great compassion and understands that people at the hospital are usually in bad situations.

''She provides great comfort for people and I have been amazed at her extraordinary expertise and professionalism.''

Mrs Short's daughter, Katherine, said her mother was a ''people person'' who built many relationships at the hospital.

''Mum is one of those people who has always loved being of service to patients and staff alike. She is so well known throughout the hospital that when my dad was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2011, we had a constant stream of staff visiting his room, right up to his death.

''So many people from all different walks of life have sent cards thanking her for her smile and help at the hospital when dealing with difficult situations.''

Mrs Short said she had been close to tears all day with the ''overwhelming and humbling'' response to her retirement but it was time to move on.

''I have two daughters and two granddaughters to look after and now it's time to open another door.''
