Hundreds of guns netted in buy-backs

Three gun buy-back and amnesty events in Dunedin, Mosgiel and Palmerston since Friday netted hundreds of now-illegal firearms and more than a thousand parts and accessories, police say.

Provisional figures for the collection on Friday at the Palmerston Sports Hall indicated 34 firearms and 84 parts were collected.

A police spokesman said the Saturday event at the Kensington Army Hall in Dunedin brought in 167 firearms and 588 parts or accessories.

Yesterday's collection at Peter Johnstone Park in Mosgiel had 67 people through the rugby clubrooms, yielding 123 firearms and 515 accessories or parts.

Southern district commander Superintendent Paul Basham said all the events so far had been positive and police looked forward to seeing more people as the amnesty and buy-back period continued.

The next collection in the South is at the Otematata Golf Club on Friday between 10am and 2pm, followed on Saturday and Sunday by two events at the Oamaru Racecourse, also from 10am to 2pm.
