Constable Lesley Eason, of Waikouaiti, said the man (in his 30s) was at a party in Warrington when an altercation started about 6am.
He allegedly hit an occupant (in his 50s) of the house with an iron bar and then threw him about 3m from a balcony.
Const Eason said the victim was taken by ambulance to Dunedin Hospital with minor injuries, and was released later that day.
It was not yet known what the altercation was about, and the man with the iron bar was still "outstanding", she said.
"He's actively avoiding police at the moment."
Const Eason said anyone with any information about the incident should call the Waikouaiti police station.
