Information sought over three vehicle fires

An  arsonist is believed to be behind a string of vehicle fires in South Dunedin during the past week.

A commercial bus was gutted by fire last Wednesday and now Dunedin CIB is investigating two car fires from the weekend.

The cars, in Jackson and Bird Sts, appeared to have been torched on Saturday night, Detective Sergeant Chris Henderson said.

The cars were parked near the Ocean Beach Hotel, near where an Atomic Shuttles bus burnt on Wednesday night.

``We believe they are all related,'' Det Sgt Henderson said.

Police were also seeking the person who raised the alarm to the bus fire.

``He was gone by the time police arrived.''

Police said it appeared someone had entered the vehicles and started the fires internally.

Similar circumstances were reported in the bus blaze.

``They have entered with a key ... or they have been unlocked. At this stage, we aren't 100% sure,'' he said.

Dunedin police (03) 471-4800, Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.
