Inner-city thefts may be linked, police believe

Police believe a string of thefts in central Dunedin on Saturday night may be linked.

Sergeant Ian Paulin said a red Subaru Impreza was stolen from Moray Pl and items taken from cars parked nearby.

Having such a string of thefts in the centre of town was unusual for a Saturday night, with foot traffic and police patrols normally deterring would-be criminals, Sgt Paulin said.

The Subaru was stolen from outside Rialto Cinema between about midnight and 4am on Sunday.

The theft was reported by a man who discovered the car missing after he finished work as a bouncer.

The incident was believed to be linked to two thefts from cars on the same night.

A GPS unit was taken from a car in George St after a window was smashed, and binoculars were taken from a car in Smith St.

• Sgt Paulin warned people not to give chase to criminals after a van owner pursued a person who had broken into their vehicle in Maori Hill.

This contaminated the scent for police dogs.

Chasing criminals was also potentially risky.

It was better to note the direction a criminal was heading and immediately call police.

The incident was not believed to be connected to central Dunedin thefts.
