Investigating defecation

The police investigation into a Frenchwoman defecating in a Dunedin street is continuing.

APET Racing owner Nik Black says a white camper van broke down outside his Vogel St business on Saturday.

He was working on Sunday night and noticed a large amount of faeces in the gutter.

"I had gone outside to get some fresh air and looked down and thought, that didn't come from a dog. Who the hell put that there?''

Mr Black reviewed security camera footage filmed outside his workshop and saw a woman defecating in the gutter about 8.30am on Sunday near another vehicle, a green and white van.

The man and the woman in the camper van were believed to be French, he said.

The woman had no excuse for the act, as BP Southern nearby in Cumberland St, was open 24 hours and had a toilet.

Council recreation planning and facilities manager Jendi Paterson said the council had not issued a fine to the freedom campers for staying overnight in an industrial area.

"The freedom campers had moved on by the time the council were informed.''

If people witnessed illegal freedom camping, they should contact the council immediately, she said.

Council contractors removed the faeces from the gutter yesterday, she said.

Defecating in public was an issue for police, she said.

"Anyone who witnesses this type of behaviour should contact police immediately.''

The council had passed information about the incident to police, she said.

Police were aware of the footage of the woman and inquiries were continuing, a police spokeswoman said.
