Waverley man Ray Sinclair (82) says he never expected the "tiny wee" cacti he bought from a Waitati nursery six years ago to grow such an abundance of flowers.

Mr Sinclair explained that cacti flowers were very rare and some cacti plants only flowered once a decade.

His cacti flowers every three years, with the blooms lasting just two days before they wither.

The flowers were so heavy they began bending downwards and Mr Sinclair had to tie them up.

"I haven't seen it with all those flowers on it before. It looked beautiful."
