Kaden Williamson (11), of Tahuna Normal Intermediate School, helps with a water sample during water and bird monitoring work at the upper Tomahawk Lagoon, Dunedin.

Kaden, his father Dean Williamson and several members of the Ecotago Charitable Trust went to the lagoon on Saturday morning as part of regular monitoring visits organised by the trust, which has its own water-analysing equipment and is keen to improve the lagoon’s water quality.

Trust treasurer Andrew Innes was "mystified" to see black swan cygnets at the lagoon in winter for the first time this year.

The trust has been monitoring water quality and black swan activity there for several years, and pupils from several Dunedin schools, including Tahuna, also participate.
