At national competitions run in association with the Wellington conference, Otago law students won the president's prize for the best overall university team over the four contest events.
Otago students Mitch Singh and his sister Roshni Kaur won the final of the Buddle Findlay negotiation competition, and will represent New Zealand at the international negotiation competition in July next year, at an overseas venue yet to be confirmed, possibly Denmark.
Fellow Otago law students Anthony Wicks and Rebecca Thomson were second in the national mooting competition, with Daniel Eyre and Stephanie Mullally also second in the client interviewing contest.
Matthew Harrop participated in the witness examination competition.
Otago team members yesterday said they were proud of what they had achieved and had appreciated the strong support from fellow students and staff.
Law Faculty dean Prof Mark Henaghan said the prize was a significant achievement and rewarded "a lot of hard work" by way of preparation for the four different law-related contests.
This work - carried out at weekends and evenings - was over and above their usual academic study requirements.
Faculty senior lecturer Selene Mize had also done an "incredible job" in coaching students who were taking part in the negotiation and client interviewing contests, he said.
• At the Wellington conference, Society of Otago University Law Students Association president Phil Thomson was elected president of the national association. He takes up his new post later this month.
