A white painting on a white wall was unveiled at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery yesterday.

The 23m by 7.2m installation Fractus was painted on the wall this week by Auckland-based South Korean artist Jeena Shin.

"The work is activated by the light. It shifts and animates according to the light conditions," Ms Shin explained yesterday. "It all depends on the position of the viewer.

"It affects how the viewer engages with the space. The space allows it to change.

"I thought that was very interesting and challenging."

The installation features an abstract triangle sequence, which changes with the light during the day.

"The shape is a device for the viewer to engage with the experience of space. The light distorts the shapes."

Ms Shin spent two weeks on a 7m high scaffold painting the wall.

"This is the biggest one I've done yet. I couldn't even visualise it till it was done," she said.

"It was quite overwhelming. Now I know every every bit of that wall. You can see traces of what everyone else has done before."

Ms Shin will hold a talk about the work at 3pm today at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery.
