The driver of a car which slammed into a power pole in Wakari fled from the scene with his dog in tow, witnesses say.

A police spokeswoman last night said police were investigating the incident, had subsequently located the driver, and were speaking to him.

The crash in Craighall Cres about 3.50pm yesterday resulted in live power lines falling across the road. Delta staff said power to six properties was cut, a power pole was replaced and power supply was restored by 9.50pm yesterday. Craighall Cr resident Anthony Hall, who witnessed the crash, estimated the driver was "going 80kmh" when he "spun out,  went sideways and hit the power pole".

"He was knocked unconscious."

Mr Hall and others helped the man out the vehicle.

"There was a carload of mates that tried to get him out and as soon as he did [get out], he took off," Mr Hall said.

The man’s dog, which had been in the car with him, followed its owner  as he ran off through the grounds of Balmacewen Intermediate School.
