This year's Mahinerangi Madness event, near Outram, will cater for runners and walkers as well as mountain bikers.

Organised by Friends of Taieri College, the fundraiser will be held on December 6 on Lindsay and Yvonne Cunningham's Thornicroft Station, off Mahinerangi Rd.

The event was introduced last year and attracted more than 50 people despite poor weather.

While some details are yet to be finalised, changes have been made from last year's format, which saw mountain bikers attempt to compete as many laps of the 10km course as possible in three hours.

Next month's event would probably include a 10km race and an 18-20km race for riders.

A walk and run would also be included, organiser Jodelle Leatham said.

''We haven't been able to get up there to get a real fix on the length of it, but hopefully over the next couple of weeks it will be all sorted,'' she said.

A schools team trophy will also be contested, which will pit teams as small as three against one another.

The team with the fastest combined time will win the trophy Taieri College claimed a year ago.

Mrs Leatham said organisers last year received ''great'' feedback on the course, which covers farm tracks and paddock.

She expects a good turnout next month.

''Last year was a bit of an unknown and weather didn't play ball,'' she said.

''But we're hoping we will get the numbers. It's a fabulous course, and everybody who rode it last year said the same thing and they've spread the word.''

Entry costs $25 for adults and $15 for children, with the run scheduled to start at 10am and the mountain bike at noon. Entries will be accepted on the day.
