Man arrested after high-speed chase named

A man accused of a South Otago aggravated robbery was allegedly found with more than 500 rounds of ammunition when detained by police.

Joshua Sinclair Hair was arrested following a high-speed chase early yesterday and was due to appear in the Dunedin District Court later in the day on 11 charges.

However, the 27-year-old fisherman was remanded in custody by consent and is next due to appear tomorrow, when he is expected to apply for bail.

Police released a statement yesterday saying the defendant was arrested at Momona following a high-speed chase.

They received reports at about 10.30pm on Tuesday that a man had entered a woman's home and demanded property using a firearm.

According to court documents, Hair made off with bank cards belonging to two women.

He allegedly fled the scene in a white Mazda, which was seen by police in Union St, Milton shortly after the incident.

Police said they initially followed the vehicle, but stopped for safety reasons.

Hair is facing a charge of reckless driving in relation to that portion of the incident.

The vehicle was spotted later at 1.25am in Titri Rd, Waihola, where the driver allegedly failed to stop.

Police again followed him through to Allanton, and he eventually stopped in Centre Rd, Momona, where he was arrested.

A witness, who passed the scene, said she saw a man on the ground with his hands behind his head, one officer with a weapon pointed at his back and another with a police dog.

She described the situation as ''so intense''.

Police allegedly found cannabis, a small axe and 524 rounds of .22 calibre cartridges in the vehicle.

Hair refused to give a blood specimen to have his intoxication levels assessed, charging documents stated.

The firearm allegedly used in the aggravated robbery had not been found.
