A man in his 70s is stretchered to an  ambulance after falling into the Taieri River, at Henley, yesterday.

Outram Fire Brigade Chief Fire Officer Stu Casey said the man had been whitebaiting,  when he slipped and fell into the river about 8.50am, seriously injuring his leg. Fellow whitebaiters  dragged him ashore. He was later taken to Dunedin Hospital by ambulance.

"It had the potential to be very serious," Mr Casey said.
