Otago University property services director Barry Mackay said work on converting the pub into the $3.3 million Marsh Study Centre was on schedule and on budget, the interior of the bar having been stripped out this week in preparation for the construction of the study centre configuration.

The project was expected to be completed by February next year, in time for the beginning of the academic year.

The main purpose of the study centre was to provide a satellite study environment at the northern end of the campus. Elements of the former Gardens Tavern would be retained, including the brick cladding and the distinctive pyramid roof of the upstairs level.
