Mayor Dave Cull opened the first South Dunedin Farmers Market yesterday, held at the corner of Thomas St and Macandrew Rd, with an official ringing of the market bell and wished the venture every success.

Despite the light rain, a steady stream of customers lined up to shop for the wares of about 25 vendors, items usually only available on Saturday mornings at the railway station market.

Market general manager John More said he had received positive feedback from South Dunedin customers, and vendors were happy with buyer numbers.

While there had been no incidents, traffic had become quite congested. The Dunedin City Council had given market organisers leeway to trial different ways of dealing with any issues.
