People have been lining up outside a Dunedin warehouse this week to see something enlightening.

The Mid-Summer Lights display, in the Ward St building, opened earlier this week, with a crowd stretching along Ward St waiting to see displays usually reserved for the Midwinter Carnival. Inside, dry ice drifted past giant hanging fungi, while huge birds and fish competed for space under glowing stars, and supple gymnasts twisted on a hoop and hanging fabric.

Dunedin Midwinter Carnival artistic director Juliet Novena Sorrel said the installation of lanterns made over more than adecade for the carnival had been set up in the Ward St warehouse for people to''walk through them and just enjoy them at their own pace'' .

The Dunedin City Council provided the venue. The carnival was looking for a permanent home for its collection where artists could work. The event is open from 6.30pm today and tomorrow.
