Money not enough to protect staff

The Government needs to give more than the $1.5 million it has pledged to ensure shop owners are protected from robbery, a Dunedin shop owner says.

The owner, who did not want to be named or his store identified, said he had not been told if his business was among those eligible for assistance from the $1.5million fund in this year's Budget to assist shop owners to combat aggravated robbery.

The measures proposed included providing some financing to shop owners for measures such as fog cannons, audible alarms, DNA sprays and CCTV cameras.

The $1.5 million was ''not enough'' to install adequate measures to protect vulnerable staff in shops, he said.

''What can you do for $1.5 million?''

He had been robbed twice this year.

''The first time I was robbed, I had a gun pointed at my head and you can't do anything.''

If he was eligible for a share of the fund, he would like CCTV cameras to be installed outside his shop, he said.
