The Dunthat Motel on King Edward St is now ‘‘been that'', following its demolition yesterday.

The former St Luke's Hospital, on a 1469sq m South Dunedin site, was levelled to make way for Pact Otago's new special residential accommodation facility for people with physical, intellectual or addiction disabilities.

Pact chief executive officer Louise Carr said the organisation had decided to build the new facility after it determined modification to the existing buildings would be too expensive.

‘‘It was considered demolishing those buildings and constructing new buildings purposely designed for supported accommodation was both more economic and practical.''

Access to the site will be off both Melbourne St and King Edward St.

Ms Carr said the facility would accommodate up to 20 residents, and staff would stay overnight as necessary.

‘‘Being under a single service co-ordinator, the site will offer a more efficient delivery of services for people with different support needs.''

It was hoped construction could begin as soon as the demolition debris had been removed, and the facility was expected to be completed by the end of this year, she said.
