Dunedin's Northern Motorway has been reopened after it was blocked when a logging truck collided with a car near the Botanic Garden this afternoon

A police spokesman said they were called to the crash at the intersection between Pine Hill Rd (SH1) and Great King St North, near the Botanic Garden, at 2.26pm.

The driver and sole occupant of a silver Mazda sedan, which appeared to be heading towards North East Valley, was initially trapped but had since been freed and taken away by ambulance.

The driver appeared conscious when he was taken into the ambulance.

The car was severely damaged, with the passenger side caved in.

The driver of the logging truck was uninjured, but a witness said he appeared shaken.

Wondered when this would happen, these trucks come barreling down the hill at a great rate of speed then move left without looking to see if a vehicle is in the left lane. My vehicle was nearly sideswiped by one of these trucks, it would have been if I wasn't quick on the brakes.
This is also an intersection where people don't stop on the stop sign, they think that because the car in front of them stopped then they don't have to and sail on through without stopping or they slow down and creep forward but don't actually stop and some don't stop at all.
