The road has reopened after a pile-up has blocked the south-bound lane of Dunedin's Southern Motorway.

An Otago Daily Times photographer at the scene said up to six cars were involved in the pile-up.

Ambulance and police were at the scene and there was a long line of cars behind the crash.

A police spokesman said they were called to the crash, near the Green Island off-ramp, about 3.30pm.

Another accident occurred on the same motorway 1km north of the first crash, where a ute had gone off of the road.

Police said no-one required medical treatment as a result of either crash.

The Southern Motorway was cleared and re-opened to both lanes at 4.30pm.
