Abandoned ''dog poo'' at Kaikorai Estuary was a hot topic at the recent Saddle Hill Community Board meeting.

Board member Jonathan Usher said volunteers at a recent community rubbish collection day at the estuary found several plastic bags with dog faeces inside.

''People are picking up their dog poo and then biffing the bag in the sand dunes. It's disgusting.

''We need to talk about poo. We do,'' Mr Usher said.

Chairman Scott Weatherall said Dunedin City Council animal control team leader Ros MacGill had confirmed a bag dispenser would be installed at the estuary to provide dog owners with bags to collect faecesBoard member John Moyle said responsible dog owners were taking the bagged faeces home with them for disposal and a rubbish bin was needed at the estuary.

Cr Andrew Whiley agreed.

''If you don't have a bin, it's a waste of time,'' he said.

Mr Weatherall moved the board to pay about $1000 to install a rubbish bin at the estuary but he wanted the council to pay for ongoing costs to empty the bin.

Board member Leanne Stenhouse seconded the motion and it was carried unanimously.
