A documentary about a musician's journey from troubled to triumphant times will have a free public screening in Dunedin tonight.

Director Jan Oliver Lucks said in 2014 the British Broadcasting Corporation commissioned him and Max Bellamy to direct the 15-minute documentary The Characteristics of C-Minor about Dunedin musician Nick Knox.

The documentary aired on BBC and was accepted for more than 20 film festivals including screenings in Canberra, Colorado and Teheran.

Dunedin's ''stark'' beauty features heavily in the film.

The documentary could not be shown to the public before it had been screened by the BBC and at the festivals, but the embargo had expired and it was available free online.

Today, at 6.15pm, it will be shown free at Otago Women's Pioneer Hall in Moray Pl.

Knox said the screening was part of Mental Health Awareness Week as the documentary focused on his ''creative expression'' and its therapeutic value and how a supportive community helped him find a way through the ''dark'' time in his life.

At the event, Knox will perform music and answer questions to elaborate on the documentary

''It's a story of hope, [it's about] people having difficult times and here's a story of how, if you're lucky, you can move through that and come out the other side.''

The event is sponsored by the Otago Mental Health Support Trust.
