New Kiwis welcomed by African drums

About 150 people were treated to an African drum performance by Robert Fugah at the conclusion of a citizenship ceremony in Dunedin yesterday.

Mr Fugah, originally from Ghana, was one of more than 70 people who became new citizens at the ceremony in the Glenroy Auditorium.

The music teacher moved to New Zealand five years ago with his family and said he was honoured to be able to perform at the event.

''Being a New Zealand citizen today is a dream come true. I really, really have been looking forward to this day and to be given the honour of performing is a real privilege.''

Otago Museum director Ian Griffin and his wife, Maria, and son, Aengus, also became new citizens yesterday.
