A Zimbabwean family who spent a year apart have together become New Zealand citizens.

The Munyuku family and 37 other people took their oaths and affirmations at the Dunedin Municipal Chambers this week. Robson Munyuku came to New Zealand in 2008 after taking the plunge and applying online for a job in Christchurch.

''It was a bit scary, but it worked out at the end of the day,'' Mr Munyuku.

It was just over a year before his wife, Ndanatseyi, and sons, Tatendaand Tinashe, joined him here, he said.

Mr Munyuku, who has worked as a Gigatown Dunedin project controller since June last year, said the transition was not too hard because everything to do with the job was set up, he said.

The worst part was being away from the family, he said.

Mrs Munyuku remained in Christchurch while she completed her nursing studies and was applying for jobs in Dunedin, Mr Munyuku said.

The new citizens were: Penelope Marie, David Richard, Rachael Louise and Heather Marie Boardman (Britain), Ranjini Mariam Carrington (India), Nathrucha Chanusorn and Natthawat Chanusorn (Thailand), Gillian Cowan (Britain), Raynaldo Caube, Mercedita Resos, Reynard Resos and Maria Kristina Resos Dain (Philippines) Frederick Ladner Foss (Canada), Nelson Atienza Hernandez (Philippines), Reju Kinattethu Raj and Priya Mary Jose (India), Seng Chhoung Leat (Cambodia), Omega Mukumbo Mwanje (Zimbabwe), Robson, Ndanatseyi, Tatenda and Tinashe Munyuku (Zimbabwe), Yuhang Ren (China), Roland Gueco, Regina Ramos Sanchez, Eugene Ramos, Lloyd Ramos, Renz Ramos and Evander Ramos Sanchez (Philippines), W.
