He is now looking forward to his next challenge, as University of Otago proctor, working closely with Otago students.
''I'm excited by the challenge,'' he said.
Mr Miller (54), who is the Ministry of Justice Otago/South Canterbury courts service delivery manager, based in Dunedin, will succeed the present proctor, Simon Thompson, after he retires tomorrow. Mr Miller will start on October 28.
Otago vice chancellor Prof Harlene Hayne said she was delighted someone of Mr Miller's ''calibre and experience'' would become the next proctor.
Mr Miller said he was looking forward to interacting with students, the vast majority of whom came to Otago to work hard towards their qualifications.
''My job includes working to ensure the campus continues to offer a safe and secure learning environment in which students treat each other and their community with respect,'' he said.
He will also supervise the five Campus Watch team leaders and their 40 members and will be responsible for emergency management at the university.
His 28-year police career included being part of the armed offenders squad, called to the Aramoana massacre in November 1990.
He had wide experience in key operational and strategic roles in the police, most recently as Southern district operations manager (2011-13).
His other roles included policing development manager, Central Otago relieving area commander, and Dunedin armed offenders squad commander.
In 2011, he was part of a New Zealand Police contingent in Afghanistan and helped train of staff and recruits in Bamyan province. As for student couch fires, he wants to continue to raise awareness about the dangers posed by the fires.
