Otago regional councillors will not be getting a pay rise this year.

The Remuneration Authority determined chairman Andrew Noone will be paid $147,000 and deputy chairman Michael Laws $83,598 for the 2021-22 year.

Councillors will be paid $62,000.

Councillors received a report from council staff showing what they would be paid for the coming year during a governance, communication and engagement committee meeting in Dunedin yesterday.

Council staff said that the authority advised it would take a ‘‘conservation’’ approach to determining elected members’ remuneration, due to economic uncertainty.

The pay levels took effect from July 1 this year and will remain in place until June 30 next year.

Councillor remuneration for the past year was also included in the report.

Cr Noone, as chairman, received $140,522 and Cr Laws, as deputy chairman, received $83,920.

Cr Marian Hobbs, who was chairwoman until mid-July last year, received $64,200 and all other councillors $62,239.

The figures do not include mileage and other allowances.

The staff report also showed how many meetings each councillor attended in the past year.

Cr Carmen Hope, who attended the least number
of meetings, raised concern about the reasons for absences not being inclu-
ded in the report.

She said she was ‘‘mortified’’ that it looked as though she had not put in the same level of effort, when in fact she had been at other council commitments that clashed.

Councillors agreed and asked that the reasons be included in reports in the future.

Council chief executive Sarah Gardner said council staff had also addressed the issue of commitments clashing to ensure it did not happen again.

Councillors were also given the option to increase their communications allowance, from $550 to $700, to cover the used of councillors’ own cellphone call and data costs.

They decided not to take the offer of an increase.
