The race for the Dunedin mayoralty is expanding as more candidates confirm their plans to run.

Two-term city councillor Andrew Whiley became the latest to do so when he announced his third mayoral bid - as well as for a council seat - in a statement late yesterday.

He said his focus would be on parking, traffic, housing, city-centre construction "and a clear vision for the city", which were all "extremely important issues" that needed to be addressed.

Cr Whiley - also the spokesman for pro-drilling lobby group ProGas Otago - believed he had the experience to lead the city and tackle the challenges of clogged streets and pressure on parking as major projects loomed.

The council also needed to do more to accelerate housing construction, and to invest in infrastructure needed to meet the threat of climate change, while focusing on the city's economy, he said.

"We can't invest in expensive alternatives if we can't pay for it without overburdening the ratepayers.

"We must be fiscally responsible but future-focused."

Cr Whiley's name appeared on the list of confirmed nominations for the Dunedin mayoralty yesterday, alongside fellow incumbent councillors Christine Garey and Aaron Hawkins.

Contenders from outside council are Carmen Houlahan, Mandy Mayhem-Bullock and Malcolm Moncrief-Spittle.

Cr Jim O'Malley and contender from outside council Scout Barbour-Evans have also confirmed their plans to run, but both were yet to formalise their nominations.

And, if Cr O'Malley was to be victorious, he might find himself sitting across the council table from his partner - former DCC business development adviser Sophie Barker.

Ms Barker announced on Thursday she would stand for a council seat, joining Crs Garey, Hawkins, Whiley and David Benson-Pope in the race to become a councillor.

Alongside them, with nominations confirmed, was outgoing West Harbour board chairman Steve Walker, Ms Houlahan, Ms Mayhem-Bullock and Mr Moncrief-Spittle as confirmed nominees so far.

Comments

Possibly just what Dunedin needs Parking and jobs if councillor Andrew Whiley is true to his words then he might be a good option for Dunedin's Mayor, Dunedin needs a change in Direction instead of chasing the Greens policy like puppy dogs reporting to Wellington.
