A Catholic Christian store is set to close its doors.

Full of Grace, in the Moran Building in the Octagon, began its closing down sale at the start of the week and will officially shut on December 22.

Fr Michael Dooley said the Catholic Diocese of Dunedin had been supporting the shop financially but it was not making enough profit each year to remain open.

"We are quite sad that the shop is shutting down but it's unfortunately due to financial circumstances.

"It's a very difficult climate to sell books and things in.''

The shop had been open for at least 50 years and was well-known, especially in the Catholic community, Fr Dooley said.

The most popular items, such as books, candles and religious items, would now be sold by the St Vincent de Paul shop.

"St Vincent de Paul are going to take over ... so there will be somewhere for people to go.

"Often, for a christening, people want to by a candle and things like that, so that will still be available.''

The Moran chapel service will carry on as usual, he said.

While there were no immediate plans for the space, it would eventually be rented out, he said.

"It's quite sad.''
