One garden thief arrested

A man has been arrested after an elderly Dunedin woman reported several thefts of plants and garden ornaments last month.

Sergeant John Hedges, of Dunedin, said the alleged "green-fingered thief", a 63-year-old man, was to appear in the Dunedin District Court on burglary charges in relation to three incidents in St Kilda.

The 87-year-old St Kilda woman was left upset by the loss of items from her garden, and Sgt Hedges said he was very pleased the persistent police work had generated a good result.

"It’s quite cool ...  that was a win."

Earlier this month, police said a thief taking gardening gear and gnomes was targeting Mosgiel.

About six properties were hit by the offender, who took gnomes, hoses and gardening equipment from Forfar St and Factory Rd, but it appears  he is  at large.

Sgt Hedges warned people to secure their vehicles after thefts from two unlocked car near Pak’n Save in Hillside Rd.
