It is never too late to create a tradition.

Nearly 150 years after Otago Boys' High School was established, the school will introduce a house system for the first time.

While most secondary schools in New Zealand have house systems to encourage competition between pupils, Otago Boys' High School does not.

Rector Clive Rennie said the house system would be implemented next year in a bid to "up the involvement" of pupils in sporting, cultural and academic competitive events at the school.

"We're surprised that we've never had a house system before.

"It's always been pretty competitive here, but as to why we've never had a house system, no-one knows."

Mr Rennie said the names of 16 past pupils at the school had been put to the vote, and the four most popular were Park, Aspinall, Saxton and McIndoe.

Sir Keith Park was a decorated World War 1 and World War 2 fighter pilot in the Royal Air Force (RAF), who played a pivotal role in the defence of London and southeast England during the Battle of Britain.

Sir Keith retired from the RAF in 1946 as air chief marshal and moved back to Auckland, where he later became chairman of the Auckland International Airport committee, and served three terms as an Auckland city councillor.

The Aspinall family was selected for providing land on their remote high country farm, Mount Aspiring Station in the Matukituki Valley, for the school's lodge, which thousands of pupils have visited as part of the school's outdoor education programme.

Charles Saxton was a former All Black halfback and Otago selector. He also managed the New Zealand team in the British Isles and France in 1967, and served on the NZRFU council (1956-71), becoming president in 1974 and life member in 1976.

He was also a World War 2 major with the 19th Armoured Regiment.

Plastic surgeon Archibald McIndoe worked at the famed Mayo Clinic in the United States before embarking on his pioneering journey repairing the bodies and the minds of Royal Air Force burns victims during the Battle of Britain.

Mr Rennie said the house system would be established next year.
