If you have been alive for one million seconds, how many birthdays have you had?

Some of the questions at the Otago Mathletics Competition at the Dunedin Town Hall yesterday would have had adults scratching their heads - but not the 10- and 11-year-olds from Kaikorai Primary School's No 1 Year 6 team.

Team members Emily Williams, Aleisha Ruske, Nicolas Taylor and Malcolm-Jesse McIver correctly answered "zero", and it was one of the 32 answers which helped them blitz the Year 6 competition.

The team was one of 65 Year 6-12 teams from Otago which participated in the event.

Event co-ordinator Jan Savell said there was a great deal of noise as the teams discussed their answers and runners took answers to the markers.

"Despite the mayhem, there were no injuries, but we did have a couple of kids who had to pull out asthma inhalers. They don't call it mathletics for nothing."
