Otago punters proving lucky despite the odds

Where do the luckiest punters in New Zealand come from?Otago, if the results of TAB Triple Trios are anything to go by.

A Mosgiel man won $100,000 on a $10 Triple Trio Easybet which he placed on the Wellington Cup on Saturday.

His win follows on from that of Len Glassford, of Milton, who won more than $300,000 on the same bet the weekend before.

The latest winner had placed a cash bet at Crofter's Pub and Cafe in Mosgiel.

Attempts to contact the man last night were unsuccessful, but a staff member of the bar said the win was exciting news for staff and there had been increased interest in the $10 Easybet in the days following the win.

TAB executive general manager Glenn Patrick said it was astonishing two people who lived in Otago had won six-figure sums two weeks in a row - ''there's obviously something in the water down there''.

To win the Triple Trio punters have to pick the first three finishing horses in the three nominated races of the day.

The odds of winning the bet varied, but it was ''unusual that it would be struck two weekends in a row'' and in such close proximity, he said.

The Triple Trio was available on the races at Wingatui Racecourse this Saturday and interest was expected to be high following the two wins in Otago, he said.
