Out of the pool and into the cool

People were left standing in togs and towels in the cold winter air after a hurried evacuation of Moana Pool this evening.

Users of the Dunedin facility were told to leave immediately shortly before 6pm.

A spokeswoman said the pool had been closed due to engineering issues, but was unable to provide more detail.

The pool would reopen tomorrow morning as usual, she said.

Zenith Swim Club's Stephanie Gillespie was shivering on the pavement in her kit while waiting for her club mates.

"It's short notice and a bit of a pain, but people are being generally cheerful in the face of adversity," she said.

Ashley Keenan, who came out holding a baby wrapped in a blanket, said she was working out when she was asked to leave straight away.

It was confusing and "a bit of a shock", but she was pleased to be handed a free pool voucher as she left.
