The owner of a vintage car is seeking information on its original owner.

Retired Dunedin man Stephen Kidd said he bought a French-built 1913 Darracq car from Southward Car Museum in Paraparaumu on the Kapiti Coast.

The museum had stopped rebuilding cars and was selling some of its stock.

The car was driveable, the upholstery was worn, and had its original wheels and was last registered in 1938.

''Essentially, the car is exactly the same as when it left the factory.''

The museum, which houses the southern hemisphere's largest private car collection, had owned the car and had it in storage since 1962.

The early history of the car was unknown and he was seeking information to track the first owner.

''I found an owner in Wellington but that was 1959 and that's as far back as I go. I just came to a dead-end.''
