A Palmerston mother has died from her injuries after the car she was driving crashed into a paddock with her seven-month-old baby girl on board.
The infant suffered only a minor injury in the crash north of Palmerston last night, which police have credited with the proper use of a quality child restraint.
The 31-year-old mother was at the wheel when the vehicle lost control on a bend and rolled south of Shag Point Rd about 7.35pm.
"It lost control and ended up in a paddock," Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken said.
The woman suffered significant head injuries and was airlifted to Dunedin Hospital, where she was in a critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit.
The infant suffered a minor injury while the 29-year-old father suffered moderate head injuries.
