There was excitement and wonder on the faces of about 100 Carisbrook School pupils yesterday as they watched Indian artist Manoj Kumar turn rolled-up paper into three-dimensional artworks.

With nothing more than coloured paper and scissors, Mr Kumar made a functional fan, a lotus flower with individual leaves and petals, a chain of people holding hands, and a streamer which measured about 2m long.

The demonstration lasted about 15 minutes, during which time he also made a thin, extendable piece of art, which he called a Christmas tree.

Carisbrook School principal Ben Sincock said it was amazing to see the art form's possibilities.

Mr Kumar is sponsored by the Indian Consulate to travel around schools in New Zealand providing demonstrations.

Mr Kumar said the traditional Indian art form, which he had been practising since he was at school, was an inexpensive way to make decorations for any celebrations within two minutes.
