A Dunedin man received facial injuries after falling from an upstairs balcony during a North Dunedin party, emergency services say.

The incident occurred about 10pm yesterday, during a gathering at a Dundas St address, Station Officer Justin Wafer, of the Willowbank Station, said.

The man, believed to be aged in his late teens or early 20s, received facial lacerations after he fell and ''landed heavily'', Mr Wafer said.

The injured man was conscious when taken to a waiting ambulance, and was then transported to Dunedin Hospital.

Further information on his condition was not available last night.

Mr Wafer said the party appeared to be a controlled ''gathering'' of about 20 or 30 friends, and police reported it was an ''uneventful'' party prior to the accident.
