Citizens are on patrol in their new car.
The Mosgiel Taieri Community Patrol has taken ownership of a Honda CRV.
Patrol secretary Sharon Buchanan-Letts said the vehicle was bought with fundraising proceeds from quiz nights.
''The money we raised comes from the support of our community'' Mrs Sharon Buchanan-Letts said.
''If it wasn't for the community supporting us, we wouldn't have this vehicle.''
She estimated volunteers would clock about 300km in the new vehicle each weekend.
''We are basically the eyes and ears of police,'' she said.
It was not feasible to operate two vehicles, largely because of running costs.
The patrol was ''absolutely fortunate'' to attract business support, including signwriting, vehicle maintenance, and insurance for the vehicle.
''We are well looked after.''
For the past four-and-a-half years, their previous vehicle patrolled the area, which included Allanton, Outram, Momona, Brighton, Green Island/Abbotsford, Whare Flat and Mosgiel.
''We have taskings from Mosgiel and Dunedin police, and we have set taskings for evening and afternoon patrols.''
Aside from those jobs, patrol members had helped report suspected drink drivers and suspicious behaviour.
The patrol was always looking for more volunteers.
Applications are available from the Mosgiel Police Station.
The new vehicle was supplied through Midway Motors, which will sell their previous vehicle on their behalf.
