PayPass, not eftpos, for World Cup

Dunedin's Forsyth Barr Stadium is expected to be using only MasterCard's "PayPass" system, or cash, for the Rugby World Cup, rather than eftpos.

But Dunedin Venues Management Ltd (DVML) chief executive David Davies said eftpos would be available before and after that event, and was already being used at the stadium's box office.

The PayPass system uses a prepaid card with a microchip, which users hold over a terminal rather than swipe.

The cards require no PIN number for purchases under $80, and are advertised as being quicker than eftpos or cash.

Mr Davies said there would clearly be eftpos at the stadium's box office, "because there already is".

But DVML would not be in control of the box office during the World Cup, and the Rugby World Cup 2011 would not use eftpos, as "it is not their chosen method of payment".

Mr Davies said, despite the "inconvenience" of a recent fire at the stadium that knocked out the eftpos service, more terminals would be available around the venue during the games booked for the next few weeks.

The fire started in a communications hub in a control room after a short in a telecommunications stack.

"Eftpos will shut down while the World Cup is on. Immediately after that it will be available," Mr Davies said.

Other stadiums around the country will also use the MasterCard system, meaning fans at the Rugby World Cup will need either cash or the cards to buy food and drink.

The cards will be available across the country for between $5 and $10, it has been reported, and can be loaded with up to $1000.
