A woman believed to have serious injuries has been rushed to Dunedin Hospital by ambulance after being hit by a car at the intersection of Moray Pl and lower Stuart St.

The woman lay on the road for about ten minutes while paramedics and police officers tended to her after the incident, which occurred about 1.45pm.

She was then lifted into the ambulance on a stretcher.

Police at the scene also spoke to witnesses who said a female was driving the vehicle which hit the woman.

A number of people in the city's centre stopped to see what had happened.

Within minutes a second ambulance crew attended, followed by another called to a separate lower Stuart St address for an unrelated incident.

Two fire appliances were also dispatched to the nearby Conservation House, following an alarm activation.
