Peony growers hit

Peony growers hitThe cold snap may have added to the woes of some peony growers in the south, but others may be thankful for extra days to get inspections completed ready for exporting blooms to the United States.

New Zealand Paeony Society president Rodger Whitson of Wingatui said some Southland peony blocks had been "wiped out" by snow.

Other growers in the Naseby area might also have been affected.

Peonies coped better with frost than snow, he said.

The bad weather follows good news last week about United States import clearance for the blooms, providing growers meet agreed spraying procedures.

Cut flower exports to the US were stopped in September following the discovery of light brown apple moths in flowers grown outdoors in the South Island.
